Oil and filter change
An oil change drains the old engine oil, replaces the filter that catches the debris, and refills with fresh oil to the grade the engine needs.
What oil change means
Oil thins and picks up contaminants as it works, so changing it is the single cheapest thing you can do for an engine's life.
What the job covers

When you might need it
- The service light is on or the interval in the handbook has passed.
- The oil on the dipstick is black and thin rather than amber and slippery.
- You mostly make short journeys, which is harder on oil than long ones.
What it costs, and what changes the price
Typically £60 to £120.
- Oil grade and quantity. A long-life synthetic in a large engine costs several times a standard oil in a small one.
- The filter is inexpensive and should always be changed with the oil.
- Some cars need the service indicator reset with a tool, which is a few minutes of labour.
How long it takes
Usually half an hour to an hour.
Common questions
How often should oil be changed?
Follow the handbook, which gives an interval in both miles and months. Short-journey driving is a reason to be nearer the shorter end.
Does the oil grade really matter?
Yes. Modern engines have tight tolerances and some need a specific manufacturer approval, not just a viscosity. The handbook says which.
Is an oil change the same as a service?
No. It is part of a service. A service also covers filters, plugs and a list of checks.
