MOT test
The MOT is the annual check that a vehicle is safe to drive and meets the rules on emissions and roadworthiness.
What mot test means
A car needs its first MOT three years after it is registered, then one every year after that. The test looks at the parts that keep you and other people safe: brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, seatbelts, the windscreen and the exhaust.

When you might need it
- Your MOT certificate is close to running out. You can renew up to a month before it expires and keep the same renewal date.
- You have bought a car and are not sure when its test is due. The government MOT history service will tell you free.
- The car has been off the road and you want to tax it again, which needs a valid MOT.
What it costs, and what changes the price
Typically £40 to £54.85.
- The fee is capped by law at £54.85 for a car. No garage may charge more than that for the test itself.
- Many garages charge less than the cap, and some do the test free or cheaply when you book a service at the same time.
- Repairs are separate from the test fee and are yours to agree or decline.
How long it takes
About 45 minutes to an hour for a car, and many garages will let you wait. Book ahead for a morning slot if you want the day to fix anything that comes up.
Common questions
What happens if my car fails?
The garage gives you a list of what needs putting right. If you leave the car with them and it is repaired within ten working days, the retest is free. You can also take it elsewhere.
Can I drive a car that has failed?
Only to a pre-booked repair or test appointment, and only if the old certificate is still valid and nothing dangerous was found. If a dangerous defect was recorded, the car should not be driven.
Is an MOT the same as a service?
No. The MOT is a legal safety check and nothing is repaired or replaced during it. A service is maintenance: oil, filters and the wear items that keep a car running well.
