Pre-purchase car inspection
An independent inspection is a mechanic looking over a car you are thinking of buying, before you buy it.
What pre-purchase inspection means
They check the mechanical condition, scan for stored faults, road test it, and look for signs of past accident repair. You get a written report, which is useful whether you go ahead or walk away.

When you might need it
- You are buying privately and have no comeback if something is wrong.
- The car is a long drive away and you want it checked before you travel.
- The price is high enough that a small fee is worth the certainty.
What it costs, and what changes the price
Typically £120 to £250.
- How thorough a check you want, from a basic look to a full report with paint depth readings.
- Travel to the seller, if the inspector is coming to the car.
- Some inspectors charge more for larger or more complex vehicles.
How long it takes
Usually one to two hours at the car, with the report following the same day.
Common questions
Will the seller agree to it?
Most genuine sellers will. Reluctance to allow an independent check is itself worth noting.
Is it worth it on a cheap car?
The cheaper the car, the larger a repair bill is in proportion. Many people find it most worthwhile at the lower end.
What does it not cover?
It is a snapshot, not a warranty. It will not predict a part that fails next month, and no inspection can.
