What gearbox repair means
Manual boxes wear in the synchromesh and the bearings; automatics and dual-clutch boxes depend on clean fluid and a working control unit. Diagnosis comes first, because a fault that feels like the gearbox is sometimes the clutch or a mounting.

A fluid and filter change is a few hours. A rebuild or exchange is two to four days.
Common questions
Does automatic gearbox fluid really need changing?
On most boxes yes, whatever a sealed for life description suggests. Clean fluid is the single biggest factor in how long an automatic lasts.
Is a rebuild or an exchange box better?
An exchange unit is usually quicker and comes with a warranty. A rebuild can be better value on an unusual or older box.
Could my gearbox problem be the clutch?
Often, yes, on a manual. A good garage will check the clutch and the mountings before recommending gearbox work.
